STORYTELLER’S TOOL BOX

In this two-part workshop, best-selling author Janis Thomas will take you step by step through these key elements, starting with that spark of an idea and helping you to hone that idea into a workable concept.

We will cover genre, theme, message, structure, character arc, beats, and other tools that will raise your story to the next level. If you are planning to do NaNoWriMo, Storyteller’s Tool Box will give you a leg up, to ensure that you don’t waste a single moment or a single word during your novel-writing journey.

October Meeting: Bestselling Author Karen Dionne

SCWA October Meeting

When Karen Dionne wrote The Marsh King's Daughter, a dark psychological suspense set in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula wilderness, she never imagined the wild journey she was about to embark upon. Praised in The New York Times as “Subtle, brilliant and mature . . . as good as a thriller can be,” The Marsh King's Daughter was translated into 25 languages and became a #1 international bestseller, took home several prestigious awards, was named to numerous best books of the year lists, and is in development as a major motion picture with Oscar-winning talent.

And yet The Marsh King's Daughter was Karen’s 4th published novel. What made this book different than the other three? How can writers use the lessons she learned to get their work noticed? In this presentation, Karen will identify the six key elements that she believes made all the difference.

When: October 17, 2020

Send Us the Best of Your Best!

Enter your prettiest pros, your finest quips, and your tallest tales because SCWA is putting together another anthology. This time we're mixing literature with gastronomy and want your most excellent literary short stories and poems, etc., alongside your favorite recipes.

We know the frozen daiquiri was a great source of inspiration for Hemingway's novel Islands in the Stream. What's yours?  And what about Flannery O'Connor. With her love for ham and mayonnaise, what might she have come up with?

With the diversity of backgrounds of our talented members, we're looking forward to a flavorful collection, with a generous amount of your writing dexterity. Because what self-respecting writers' organization would build a cookbook without stories included?

Each entry is to feature a creative story—literary, poetic, historical, poignant, humorous—the field is open. With the limited space of one page, the story should be 250 words or less. The recipe will follow on the subsequent page.

The book will be professionally published by SCWA and promoted with all the marketing tools at our disposal. The proceeds will come back to the SCWA pocketbook to further help fund our events, speakers, scholarships, and publication of books, including this one.

The deadline has been extended to October 31, 2020. Please put SCWA Entry in the subject line.

We encourage all our members to submit up to two entries to Nancy Klann at klanncy@aol.com.

For interested nonmembers, a submission fee of $50.00 will include a 17 month membership in SCWA through December 31, 2021.

P.S. Title suggestions are welcome.
